#16 Every Time I Die’s “The Sweet Life”

Daniel:

The mystery of an ETID song is that they all sound the same, but, simultaneously, they rock more and more as you progress through an album. Ergo “The Sweet Life,” closing out their 2009 offering New Junk Aesthetic, which is technically immaculate and lyrically amazing. Riffing that Matthew Wilder lyric doesn’t hurt in boosting up the rock-quotient, either. It’s a “black out with your sack out” kind of jam.

Truitt:

Although Freshjive has taken a subtler approach to their branding, trading textual logos for a black box icon, the same unfortunately can’t be said for their clothes. For a t-shirtcommentary on “how the Obama administration is maintaining continuity with its disgraced predecessor,” the streetwear company took a ham-fisted approach, clarifying their washed out, faded copy of Shepard Fairey’s “Hope” portrait with the words “is fading fast.” Designers take note: when your message is a manipulation of the most iconic image of Obama, and possibly any President ever, there’s really no need for superfluous text, which like explaining a joke, ruins it.

-Animal

#17 Julian Casablancas’ “Left & Right In The Dark”

Daniel:

Truitt once said to me that Is This It? will someday be remembered as the album that got kids to stop wearing baggy pants and skate shoes and trade into skinny jeans and stop washing their hair. And I agree. Unfortunately, that age has ended… even for The Strokes.
This song is so L.A. circa 1980s it’s terrifying. I mean, really, the Flock Of Seagulls’ “I Ran (So Far Away)” echo riff in the verses makes the trailer to The Informers play in my head every time I hear it. Not surprisingly, Julian is spending the month of November playing residency in Los Angeles. But what’s up with the fade-out-and-shock-back at the end? Maybe, for all the “wake ups,” it just needs an alarm clock.

Truitt:

I’m glad I said that to Daniel. I’m thinking about my “top of the 2000s” list and I can’t think of anything to put above Is This It? I still think it’s my generation’s defining album… our greatest contribution… a trailblazer? It’s a shame that they never matched their first album. Well, they got close with their 2nd and then fell off the deep end with their 3rd. I guess Julian used to write all the songs, so I was excited about this because I figured it would be the “Strokeseist” of the solo albums. It would be if it wasn’t on coke in the keyboard section at guitar center on Hollywood Boulevard at 3am. At least it’s better than Albert Hammond Junior’s album((s?) Does he have more than one album?). I like this album a little bit though, even though most of it sounds like Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix b-sides.

Roll 007: Photo 011 (D.

FEELING BORED? INTERESTED IN WHY LADY GAGA IS IMPORTANT?
I HAVE THE ESSAY FOR YOU!
I wrote a paper on Lady Gaga for my “What is Postmodernism?” class and some folks expressed interest in reading it after it’s finished, so here is an excerpt (it’s the introduction):

Thus far in her career, a critical examination of Lady Gaga’s anomalistic position within the current postmodern condition has been notably absent; notable especially considering the markedly divided opinions expressed on both her character and career (she’s either depthless or brilliant or met with an ironic, qualified embrace). Except for the occasional aside in album reviews and articles, little effort has been made on the part of culture/music/art critics to consider the implications of Gaga’s insistence that she is first and foremost a performance artist, and what impact this has on the way we receive her perceptibly “depthless” dance music. The hesitation to do so can probably be attributed to Gaga’s status as a pop artist—that is, not fine artist. The impulse to categorize the two is characteristically modernist, but her attempt at bridging the two can be thought of as a postmodern effort, if not a naïve one. Regardless of whether she belongs in the high or low culture box, I believe the development of a critical discourse surrounding her work is highly relevant to a richer understanding of culture’s current schizophrenic state.

There are some holes in it and it’s kind of a draft for something I want to take further. Download the PDF here! Email me “your thoughts” at: annalouisemack at gmail

As a sort of laid-back surf groove, this is John Dwyer & Co. at their finest, milking the blissed-out fuzz of their particular brand of tape-rock for all it’s worth.

Thee Oh Sees are a band that I used to make fun of Daniel for liking, but last year I apologized for giving him crap about it. The band is called Sore Eyelids, and this is some of the most genuine, gorgeous, and pure emo I’ve heard since The Pine. Considering they get their band name (I’m guessing) from a Pine song title, it’s no wonder. For the record, if the term “emo” scares you and you don’t know who The Pine is, well, you really have no idea what you’re missing.

Sore Eyelids is members of this Swedish band called Suis La Lune.

OH crazy story… okay, so The Pine is/was from Bakersfield, CA, and is really the only music group from the past 10-15 years ol’ Bakersburg should ever be proud of claiming for themselves… anyway, former members of The Pine went on to form a punk band called Loser Life, as well as a couple of the guys opened a record shop in downtown Bakes called Going Underground. Okay so moral of the story is that one time I was down at Going Underground and I ended up buying a Pine 12” from some former members of the band and it was awkward and awesome at the same time.

Anyway click here or on the photo above to download Sore Eyelids’ EP.
You can thank me later.

THE TWO-HEADED BOY MIXTAPE; 2009

#19 People Under The Stairs’ “Trippin’ At The Disco”

Daniel:

The Los Angeles savants of straight-up drum and bass hip-hop, immaculately sampled and produced by Thes One, PUTS get their groove on. This is the most roller-rink fun hip-hop could have seen all year, and runs neck-and-neck for the prize of most lighthearted mirth on the duo’s 7th studio album Carried Away (the other track, titled “Beer” and about the same, includes a sample from “The Price Is Right” theme song).

Truitt:

I don’t know much about underground hip-hop. I listen to a lot of rap though. Last night I got really drunk and made some macaroni and cheese while listening to Jay-Z. I passed out a little while later.

Roll 007: Photo 008 (D.
